Larry Wittmer has volunteered at the Museum since 2018 and has accrued 1,055 service hours. Larry chose to volunteer here since he’s always been interested in lighthouses, has read about them, and visited them on vacation. He grew up in Iowa, graduated college in Missouri, and joined the Army for two years. After the military, Larry worked in sales for the next 36 years, domestic and international. Larry and his spouse, Jan, recently celebrated 58 years of marriage and have two sons and five grandchildren. His most memorable experience as a volunteer happened as three guests entered the Lighthouse courtyard. “Are you three together?” he greeted. Together, three ladies started to cry. He immediately apologized and asked what was wrong. “No one has addressed us that way. We are sisters and just met in the parking lot. We found each other on Ancestry and decided to meet here at the St. Augustine Lighthouse.” Larry and his siblings are all adopted, and this experience was quite meaningful...
