Seattle Sounders’ 18-year-old young talent Obed Vargas explained to Jeremiah Oshan on why he declined a call-up to the U.S. U-19 team.
Obed made his Sounders debut at just 15, becoming the third youngest player in MLS history, and is very highly rated.
He also quickly rose through the U.S. youth ranks and was a member of the U.S. U-20 squad last year in the U-20 World Cup.
The midfielder then received a call-up to the U-23 squad last fall. Unfortunately, his chances of going to the Olympics this summer seem unlikely as he failed to make the final training camp this month.
After failing to make the latest U.S. U-23 squad, he got called up to the U-19 squad but Obed feels it’s better for him to keep playing with the Sounders at this point in his young career.
Born in Alaska to Mexican parents, Obed’s father played for the youth academy of Morelia in México. There has been rumors about México being interested in Obed. 🇺🇸🇲🇽
