In the year since the Iowa Legislature passed Senate File 496, restricting the types of books available to students in Iowa’s public schools, 3,399 books have been pulled from school shelves. And while a temporary injunction last December put a hold on enforcing the new law, most of those books haven’t been returned to shelves, according to data the Des Moines Register collected from public records requests sent Iowa’s 325 public school districts. This isn’t the first time the Register has sent records requests on this issue to Iowa’s school districts. Last year, the Register found that, since 2020, few school districts had received a public request challenging any of the books in their libraries.
