The double inhale portion of the physiological sigh allows the alveoli (little sacs of air in the lungs) to “pop” open. When this happens, we are better able to take in oxygen and offload carbon dioxide during the exhale.
Increased levels of carbon dioxide signal the stress response in the body, so the offload of carbon dioxide decreases stress.
