Greg Mistell, one of the leading figures in America’s artisan bread movement of the 1980s and 1990s, a baker whose Delphina’s and Pearl Bakery set the bar for pastries and bread in Portland, and whose Hollywood neighborhood follow-up Fleur de Lis marked a quieter but no less beloved second act, has died. He was 75.
The cause was cancer, said Lisa O’Leary-Mistell, his wife.
Family and friends remember Mistell as a humble, generous, occasionally mischievous soul with a dry wit and passion for music, golf, gardening and of course baking, a career he envisioned from a young age and pursued doggedly for decades.
