#hounews houstonmayor Turner is alarmed by reports that the state intends to take over the Houston Independent School District as soon as next week. Under the current elected school board, HISD has made significant progress and improvement even as it continues to operate under a lack of adequate state funding. Replacing the elected officials representing the largest school district in Texas with outside managers is a blatant overreach of authority that disenfranchises HISD parents and the surrounding community at the cost of the students. He encourage the state to work with parents and community leaders to find a solution that better serves the interests of the 194,000 students currently enrolled in HISD schools
