How a lost echidna was finally found! đź‘€ (link in bio)
After spending more than a week hiking and setting up camera traps in the Cyclops Mountains, the expedition team searching for Attenborough's Long-beaked Echidna (also called Payangko in the local Tepera language) hadn't found a trace of it. So with only a few days left to search, they made a bold decision: to scale the mountain one last time.
"As we floundered into our final camp, breathless and aching, there was the sense that this area was different," writes Andrew Tilker, Species Conservation Officer for Re:wild and a member of the expedition team. "Somehow this forest—with its stunted trees, moss covered limbs, and omnipresent carnivorous pitcher plants—gave the impression that it might hold the secrets we were searching for."
