Venture back to May 2000 when the tragic water-borne disease outbreak occurred in Walkerton, ON — one of the world’s largest outbreaks of E.coli. Bacterial contamination of municipal water in Walkerton was the most severe public health disaster in Canadian history. A tragedy that resulted in 7 deaths and 2300 ill cases.
Fast forward a few years to 2014 when the Flint water crisis began. A year when the city of Flint, Michigan, changed its water source from Lake Huron and Detroit River to the Flint River. As a result, there was an influx of lead leaking into the water supply, exposing 100,000 residents to elevated lead levels. Included in these rates were up to 12,000 children who risked long-term effects from lead poisoning.
