Don’t forget! Tonight from 6 pm - 7 pm, the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) invites the public to join our free virtual program, “Maryland Emancipation Day: A Vote of the People.”
In this dialogue between David Armenti, MCHC Vice President of Education & Engagement, Marcus “Sankofa” Nicks, Founder of History Heals Consulting, and Maya Davis, Director of the Riversdale House Museum, we will explore the text of the speech delivered by Samuel H. Berry, Esquire at the Maryland Constitutional Convention of 1864.
This oration, delivered in opposition to the emancipation of enslaved peoples, presents a fraught aspect of Maryland's emancipation story that many of us may not consider at first. Although the emancipation of Maryland's enslaved population was voted in by the state's people, nearly half of the state was deeply against it. Armenti will explore this documented speech as part of a larger conversation about the unique story of emancipation within Maryland.
