Mark your calendars for a day of reflection and celebration! Maryland Emancipation Day, much like Juneteenth, holds deep historical significance. On November 1, we commemorate the momentous day when Maryland's new state constitution abolished the institution of slavery back in 1864. Join the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) in a meaningful conversation, as David Armenti, MCHC Vice President of Education & Engagement, engages with Marcus “Sankofa” Nicks, Founder of History Heals Consulting and Maya Davis, Director of the Riversdale House Museum. Many materials in the MCHC collection, such as this cover page of a speech delivered earlier in 1864, illustrate the obstacles Black Marylanders overcame on a difficult road to freedom. This virtual program is free and open to all audiences, providing a platform for learning and unity. Together, let's honor our history and work towards a more inclusive future.
