Although Baltimore album quilts were extremely popular in their day, very little was written or recorded about them. Scholars studying this unique craft must rely on select primary sources like this 1850 diary entry by a woman named Hannah Mary Trimble. In it, she wrote about viewing two album quilts and meeting Mary Simon, who is a regarded as an expert quilter and one of the most masterful designers of the Baltimore album quilt era. Learn more about the Baltimore album quilt tradition and how these quilts served as the building blocks for Dr. William Rush Dunton Jr.’s groundbreaking work in occupational therapy through the ongoing exhibition, “Wild and Untamed: Dunton’s Discovery of the Baltimore Album Quilts.” Image: 1850 diary excerpt from Hannah Mary Trimble (1826-1926), 1849-1850, Baltimore, Maryland.
