In a historic night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta United toppled Liga MX giants Club America by a score of 3-2 to earn their first ever Campeones Cup trophy. In a supercup-style final designed to have the MLS Cup champions and Mexico’s Campeon de Campeones fight for supremacy, Atlanta emerged victorious after an exciting 90 minutes of soccer. Atlanta dominated possession throughout the opening 45 minutes of play and even got on the scoreboard first through Emerson Hyndman. Early into the 2nd half, though, Frank de Boer’s side found themselves down 2-1 after Ibarra Mina and Roger Martinez scored on both sides of halftime to pull Club America ahead. Fortunately for Atlanta, a pair of second half goals by Larentowicz (59’) and Josef Martinez (65’) were enough to give them the 2019 Campeones Cup trophy at home.
