The trial of imprisoned American journalist Evan Gershkovich began in Russia this morning, more than a year after he was shockingly arrested on charges of spying, something the White House and his employers reject as false. The Wall Street Journal correspondent became the first Western journalist to be charged with spying in Russia since the Cold War when he was detained in March 2023.
