After six BART stations added bathroom attendants to underground restrooms over the past two years, BART deployed its first above-ground restroom attendant at El Cerrito del Norte.
Currently, not all stations have restroom attendants. The seven stations with attendants are some of BART’s busiest locations, including Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, Lake Merritt, 19th St. Oakland, Downtown Berkeley and now El Cerrito del Norte, according to a BART press release.
The restroom attendants will be on duty during all working hours of the station restrooms. The press release said the role of restroom attendants will be to greet riders and discourage “unwanted behavior.” Further responsibilities include recording bathroom usage, checking on cleanliness, notifying janitors when needed and calling BART Police to intervene when necessary, according to BART spokesperson Jim Allison.
