State Assembly Bill 1780, or AB 1780, which would prohibit legacy or donor preference for university admission during early action and regular cycles in California, is set to be voted on at the Senate Judiciary Hearing on July 2, 2024. If passed, AB 1780 would not ban legacy or donor students and would allow California universities to continue admitting students from legacy or donor ties, but these students would not receive preferential treatment. Additionally, the bill would financially penalize schools continuing to practice legacy and donor admissions with a civil fine, according to a press release by Assemblymember, and co-author of the bill, Phil Ting. According to Ting, AB 1780 would prohibit universities that receive public funding for financial aid from giving preferential treatment to children of legacies, or former alumni and donors.
