With each youth coach I talk to, each facility owner and each parent that calls, it's becoming all the more evident that there is an epidemic in youth baseball and youth sports in general today: . . Kids are terrified of failure. . . Methodical practice has been abandoned. The focus is not on growth or process but rather a collection of outputs and metrics - kids are not being given the space to try, to struggle, and to learn through error. Too many feel good drills in practice. Too many kids afraid to use practice to fail and to create. . . It's bad enough that this hurts their chances of being successful in actual competitive environments; sports should serve as opportunities for kids to learn real-life lessons and to grow as people. What kind of message does this send? In life, challenge is a given. Struggle is a given. Let's help our kids embrace failure and use it to learn. Let's build mental warriors in 2018. . .
