We turned to TV host and DIY expert, ChipWade, for a few helpful tips to keep your DIY project safer: • It’s tempting to do but NEVER PAINT smoke alarms (or cover them with stickers or decorations). These can keep alarms from sensing smoke properly.
• While you already have the ladder out, visually check the color of your smoke alarms (every smoke alarm needs replacement after 10 years). If alarms are faded and yellow, it might be time to replace them. Forgot installation date? You can check the manufacturing date on the back of the alarm and add 10 years.
• DO NOT PAINT WINDOWS SHUT. In the event of an emergency, windows may need to be used to safely escape outside.
• Do not paint over electrical outlets – this risks getting paint inside the slots or pushing paint into the outlet after it dries which can cause a fire. Always use painter’s tape to cover outlets and remember to turn off the room’s...
