Washington’s Ridgefield School District librarians Jubilee Roth and Emily Crawford were looking for a fun activity to wrap up the school year when Roth learned about Storywalks—an activity that places a children's storybook along a walking path for a class read aloud.
“I’m always looking for ways to give my students a reason to move around, rather than just sitting [reading],” says Crawford, who selected the book “Baghead” by Jarrett Kroscoczka—the story of a young boy who spends the day wearing a brown paper bag over his head after giving himself a haircut.
To create their StoryWalks, both librarians disassembled the pages of their books, laminated them, and set the pages on stakes along an outdoor path on school grounds. As students walked along the path, they could raise their hand to read a page aloud to their classmates.
