The traditional approach to teaching math—“I show you the methods, you’re going to accept and use them”—can make many students feel anxious about the subject and eventually check out altogether, according to Jo Boaler, a math professor at Stanford University and a best-selling author.
Stereotypes about who has a “math brain” or “innate ability” in the subject, are especially impactful for girls and people of color who struggle to see themselves as math learners. “It is difficult to know how many people walk around in society harboring damaging ideas about their math ability, but I estimate it to be at least half of the population,” according to Boaler, who shares some tips for teachers to make math education a more fulfilling—and inclusive— experience for students:
