Teacher Mary Davenport writes that a conscious effort at her school to adjust the curriculum in response to the challenges created by the pandemic has led to careful thinking about what really matters for fostering deep learning. Homework, for example, doesn’t necessarily make sense at the moment.⁣ ⁣ Her school examined its curricular priorities through the idea that deep learning is slow: “Deep learning requires time for retrieval, practice, feedback, reflection, and revisiting content; ultimately it requires struggle, and there is no struggle without time.” That productive struggle, however, need not include homework, which Davenport says was previously integral to her brisk “get it done” approach.
