Today is a sad day in our Lighthouse history. It’s the anniversary of the tramway accident that killed Mary & Eliza Pittee and their young unnamed playmate on July 10, 1873 while the second St. Augustine Lighthouse was under construction. The girls were playing in a rail cart that led to water when the brakes failed, causing the cart to flip over, trapping them underneath the water. A construction worker who witnessed the accident rushed over to help, but could only save one child, Carrie Pittee, who was Mary and Eliza’s sister. The girls’ presence is still felt today. People say they hear giggling and singing throughout the grounds. Learn more about the girls on our Dark of the Moon Ghost Ghost Tours every Wednesday through Sunday.
