Donkeys, meet the donkeys! Wilma and Pebbles are the guardians of our sheep herd and their lambs! If you live in Gainesville, they might be a familiar sight, but you probably don't know how this pair of asses landed their security positions at the University of Florida.
UF Animal Sciences Department inherited the donkeys from a long-time employee who fell ill and passed away.
Upon arrival, the animals had behavioral issues that made it difficult to care for them. But where many saw an impossible situation, two UF College of Agricultural and Life Sciences professors saw a learning opportunity! Dr.'s Brooks and Wickens built a course to benefit undergrads and help these donkeys settle into their new pasture.
Now, we're happy to report that Wilma and Pebbles receive
#veterinary and routine care without sedation and enjoy visits from guests.
Since the
#donkeys arrived, ZERO lambs have been lost to predators.
