The spacious rooms of the newly-built Holgate Library were far from quiet on Saturday, its first day open to the public, as well over a 100 neighbors and families loudly explored the space. But staff weren’t shushing the excited patrons who showed up to kick off the three-day celebration of the library’s opening — they were enthusiastically chatting with the people who turned out to see Multnomah County’s newest library, built with $27 million in funding from a November 2020 capital bond. The Foster-Powell neighborhood has been waiting for the new library to open ever since Multnomah County Library announced that it would be closing the old library in December 2022 to begin construction of the new one, which is three times bigger and boasts a suite of new community resources.
