This week’s #ArtistOnTheRise is prettyboydo a Nigerian artist set on making a name for himself in the Afrobeat scene. Prettyboydo moved to New York to pursue a career in medicine, as his parents pushed for. While in college, he soon learned he had a different passion in mind and decided to switch his major to Business Management, resulting in his family cutting off any funding for his education. This took juggling several jobs along with studying in order for him to finally graduate with his degree. During this time and while still thinking about going back to school for another degree, Prettyboydo was also creating music and rapping on tracks. Although he initially began in 2012, he became recognized in 2018 by creating his own sound that combined rap with Afrobeats. Prettyboydo has set himself apart from other Afrobeats artists by fusing styles, flows and rhythms from dancehall and reggae and combining it with the more afrobeat pop sound.
