This week’s
#ArtistOnTheRise is Raveena, an American singer and songwriter that infuses styles of jazz, r&b, and soul to create her own unique sound.
Her family came to the US following the 1984 anti-Sikh persecutions in India. Growing up in the US she graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, she released her first EP titled Shanti, introducing us to her style of combining Indian influences with the music she was inspired while growing up.
Raveena’s style has become a staple of this infusion. These mixes of soul and jazz with Indian and South Asian influences can be seen in her last album Lucid.
Raveena’s lyrics usually include themes of her culture, feminism, motherhood, and her own experiences and traumas. One of her most well known songs is titled “Honey”, in which you can hear her soft vocals paired with jazz-styled beats.
