In honor of
#HospitalWeek, we’re taking a walk through UPMC history. This illustration shows the original Williamsport Hospital in 1891. A few years later, in 1923, Muncy Valley Hospital opened, converted out of a house previously occupied by the Noble family. After garnering community and funding support, Divine Providence Hospital was opened in 1951, founded by Williamsport native Sister Mary Theresilla Hills S.C.C.
For decades, those three hospitals cooperated often, lending each other equipment and sharing technology. After the health care environment became very competitive, Muncy Valley, Williamsport Hospital, and Divine Providence Hospital joined together to become Susquehanna Health System in 1994, with the goal to enhance the quality of care throughout the consolidation of all their services.
