In honor of #HospitalWeek, we're sharing interesting history and trivia about some of the 35+ hospitals that make up the UPMC system. UPMC East is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2022. UPMC built the hospital from the ground up to serve residents of communities east of Pittsburgh. Did you know that UPMC East utilized 100 percent recycling of the former building on the site? Additionally, the hospital was designed for energy reduction, with larger windows and maximized solar efficiencies from building orientation, to reduce energy operating expenses. UPMC East achieved LEED Silver, a national recognition for sustainability, at its opening. The hospital is located on a 16.7-acre campus in Monroeville, Pa. To meet growing needs, recent projects at UPMC East include increasing the number of Operating Rooms, opening an Outpatient Pharmacy, and expanding the 24/7 Emergency Department. UPMC East has been an economic pillar in Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs since 2012.
