#HospitalWeek, we're sharing interesting history and trivia about some of the 35+ hospitals that make up the UPMC system.
Patient care in the north central Pa. community in the early 1800's took place primarily at home, until the opening of the Williamsport Hospital in 1891, a three-story brick building. Shortly after, in 1923, Muncy Valley Hospital opened, converted out of a house previously occupied by the Noble family. Next, Williamsport native Sister Mary Theresilla Hills S.C.C expressed the need to provide a “place where the sick and injured could be treated in accordance with the mercy and compassion of Christ, coupled with the best principles of medical practice.” After garnering community and funding support, Divine Providence Hospital was opened in 1951.
