Who needs to smell like roses when you can smell like a skunk? (Apologies to the skunk.)
Skunk cabbage is a plant native to North America that grows in wetlands, swamps, and marshy areas. It’s known for having a distinctive smell, which some people describe as similar to, well, a skunk. Skunk cabbage (great name for a band or that doll you had in the ‘80s that you left outside for a week that was never quite the same) produces large, hooded flowers in early spring that are often purple or yellow in color. The plant is also known for its large, glossy green leaves that can grow up to three feet long. With its, shall we say, distinctive aroma, it also attracts pollinators like flies by mimicking the scent of things they like to eat. Like animal droppings and rotting flesh. Nice.
