Florets are extending! Next up: peduncle elongation. 🌸
What the peduncle? D.C.'s cherry trees are getting closer to reaching peak bloom. They are currently in the florets extended stage. Soon to be followed by peduncle elongation and then puffy white! We know what you’re thinking. It’s science.
Puffy white or peak bloom is defined when 70% of the blossoms have opened, revealing the magnificent pink and white blossoms. It typically occurs between the last week of March and the first week of April. This year, the trees are expected to reach peak bloom sometime between March 23-26. The trees typically bloom for a period of several days, although length of the blooming period depends on weather conditions. Cool, calm weather can extend the length of the bloom, and a rainy, windy day can bring a premature end to the ephemeral blossoms.
