“Get me chlorophyll! Why are these people driving by and smiling at me? You monsters!" - Jim Gaffigan While aspens (you can tell it’s an aspen because of the way it is) display green leaves throughout much of the year, in fall chlorophyll (more like borophyll?) breaks down and the green color disappears. This allows other pigments to become visible, like carotenoids that produce brilliant yellow and orange leaves, the most common color for aspens. Some leaves will generate red pigments, anthocyanins, due to excess water and sugars. Neat! Happy leaf peeping. Monsters! Image: Sunlit views of golden colored Aspen trees at grandtetonnps.
