On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas; he died shortly thereafter. The thirty-fifth president was forty-six years old and had served less than three years in office. For those alive at the time, Kennedy's assassination made a lasting impact. Many can recall exactly where they were and what they were doing, when they received the news.
Today, visitors can gain an impression of the life of young JFK and the family influences that helped shape him. Located in Brookline, Massachusetts, John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site preserves Kennedy’s birthplace. Restored to its 1917 appearance by Rose Kennedy, the family donated the house at 83 Beals to the National Park Service as a gift to the American people in 1967.
