Kīlauea volcano continues to fill both the night sky with its ethereal glow and the crater with voluminous amounts of lava. 🌋 At last count, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists estimated 4.2 billion gallons of lava (15.9 million cubic meters) have filled the lava lake since the summit eruption began three weeks ago on September 29. For more information on the current eruption and safe viewing areas, please visit the park web page: nps.gov/havo This image was taken just before sunrise, a day before the hoku moon, on October 18 from the crater edge behind Volcano House.
