I always tern up for Migratory Bird Day! ⁣ ⁣ Migratory birds are the feathered ambassadors of our planet; they connect water, land, air, and us to other people, cultures, and countries far away. Spring migration of birds to Arctic Alaska is in full swing, where there is endless daylight and a superabundance of space and food―the reason birds undertake these incredible journeys. The coastal environments of Bering Land Bridge National Preserve are breeding areas for many bird species and staging areas for others that continue their migrations farther north to their breeding grounds. In fact, more shorebird species breed in Alaska than in any other state in the U.S. and most of them have undertaken marathon flights to arrive in the Preserve. For example, the Bar-tailed Godwit will make a 7,000-mile non-stop flight to Alaska from New Zealand.
