In many countries in Africa, female students are far more likely to drop out of school by the time they reach secondary school. In Malawi, girls are almost 10% less likely than boys to attend secondary school due to a variety of structural and social factors. Meanwhile, females age 15+ are 15% less likely to be literate than males in Malawi (EPDC, 2018). This disproportionally limits opportunities for girls and young women to pursue their educational and professional aspirations.
That’s why The Sonder Project’s student sponsorship program strives to enroll at least as many girls as boys, if not more. For the 2021-2022 school year, among our 87 sponsored students, 58% are female. When we asked the girls what their dream jobs are, the most common responses were teacher, healthcare practitioner, and even an extension worker for The Sonder Project! We are proud to be empowering female students to complete their education and follow their dreams.
