It's time to face the facts. If there is anything other than titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide listed under "Active Ingredients" on a sunscreen's label, it is not a fully mineral sunscreen. To address concerns about the safety and efficacy of sunscreen ingredients on human health, the FDA recently studied six active ingredients (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and oxtinoxate) in chemical sunscreens and identified that all of them get absorbed into the human bloodstream with just one use. Only the minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide currently meet the FDA's criteria for safe and effective for use. While any sunscreen is still better than no sunscreen, it's time to take a closer look at sunscreen labels.
