As firefighters are working on putting out a pair of wildfires in the Columbia River Gorge, they’re contending with another seasonal scourge in the woods: hikers, backpackers and trail runners who are flouting trail closures around the burns. David Spangler, Oregon State Parks manager for the Columbia Gorge, said people have been ignoring closure signs posted to trails this week as they set off into the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness, a rugged area between Bonneville and Hood River that’s known for its challenging trails with spectacular views.
