Today, collegiate athletics as we have known it have ceased to exist. For the first time in 109 years, Cal will not be part of the Pac-12 Conference — the Bears now belong to the Atlantic Coast Conference. After Pac-12 leadership struggled to complete a major TV deal following the expiration of a 12-year contract with ESPN and Fox, the conference was as good as gone. USC’s and UCLA’s announcement to join the Big 10 on June 30, 2022 led the way — in August 2023, Oregon and Washington followed the Los Angeles schools to the Big 10, while Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State fled to the Big 12. With each school now members of their respective conferences, Cal and collegiate athletics as a whole will now face completely uncharted territories.
