“Let the wild rumpus start!” - Maurice Sendak  Come sail away with us to Greenwich Village National Historic District! This New York City neighborhood has been the site of many historically significant movements, from women’s, immigrant, and labor rights protests and parades in the early 20th century, to LGBTQ+ activism and anti-war demonstrations in the 1960s and 1970s.  Many notable artists, musicians, and writers have also called Greenwich Village home, including Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak, who lived and worked in this home/studio with his partner Eugene Glynn.  The National Park Service is helping to create a more complete picture of Greenwich Village’s historical significance. Using funds provided through NPS’s Underrepresented Communities Grant Program (URC), nystateparks State Historic Preservation Office partnered with the nonprofit nyclgbtsites to catalog historically significant LGBTQ+ sites within Greenwich Village.
