Photos by amivitale | In northern Kenya, the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, owned by the Samburu community, rescues and rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves and reintroduces them to the wild. The sanctuary’s rewilding approach guides the elephants back to their natural habitat with minimal stress, fostering a strong connection to the environment. Elephant guardians monitor the elephants’ movements using GPS technology, alerting communities in order to prevent conflicts. The elephants contribute to the local economy through ecotourism and the milk to market initiative—Samburu women provide fresh goats milk to the sanctuary to feed the elephants—thereby supporting jobs and conservation efforts. #WorldElephantDay
