Less than 16% of students from our partner countries, Burkina Faso and Malawi, graduate from high school, most often due to a lack of financial resources to pay for school fees and materials.
This statistic is even worse for girls, who are more prone to dropping out of school when household incomes become limited.
Many of the students sponsored by The Sonder Project through the 'Education Is Power' program had either dropped out, or were at risk of dropping out, once their school fees increased in high school.
Now, for our sponsored students, the largest obstacle to staying in school is overcome, leading to higher than average graduation rates. We have already had 7 of our Power students graduate successfully this past year!
Higher graduation rates are correlated with many individual and societal benefits including higher civic engagement, better health, longer life expectancy and increased economic opportunity. It's a vital tool for sustainable development!
