One Iowan challenged his community to help pay off its school district's lunch deficit. He reached his goal in less than a week, but he's hoping the initiative won't stop there. Rick Vernon, a longtime Newton Cardinal booster and now Clive resident, had seen the Newton Daily News report that the school district's school lunch deficit had reached more than $23,000 back in May. Then, at the beginning of August, he came up with a solution: He would pledge to match every food service donation until the beginning of the school year for the Newton Community School District.
