One Iowan challenged his community to help pay off its school district's lunch deficit. He reached his goal in less than a week, but he's hoping the initiative won't stop there.
Rick Vernon, a longtime Newton Cardinal booster and now Clive resident, had seen the Newton Daily News report that the school district's school lunch deficit had reached more than $23,000 back in May.
Then, at the beginning of August, he came up with a solution: He would pledge to match every food service donation until the beginning of the school year for the Newton Community School District.
With his goal in Newton reached, Vernon now wants to challenge communities in the rest of the state to do the same.
