Each of us is made up of a variety of identities – As Debra Meyerson writes in her book - Identity Theft: Rediscovering Ourselves After Stroke “Our identity is not a static thing… It is a mix of our desires and ambitions, associations and roles, values and relationships, and emotions and thoughts.”
Identities are dynamic – When a stroke occurs, it can cause dramatic identity impacts. Still, it’s important to remember that each of us changes all the time, even without a traumatic event like a stroke.
Our relationships impact our identities – We are who we are in the context of the people and communities around us. After a stroke, relationships can change but remember that there is a choice in who we spend our time with.
Identity is a choice – the question isn’t just “who AM I now” it is “who do I WANT TO BE now?” Disabilities may limit options, but they don’t have to dictate who we are.
