In 1965, the same year The Beatles’ sang “Help!,” the Black Bird general store opened in Medford. Since then, bargain hunters, wildlife seekers and DIYers, from driveway mechanics to basement beer makers, have flocked to “the Bird” to find the materials they need.
In between shelves stuffed with kitschy to crucial items for hard work or outdoor adventures, underneath weird signs like “free ride in a police car” for shoplifters and within earshot of two whistling myna birds are employees offering to find anything — from steel crab traps to $700 firefighter boots — you need.
