Ten years ago today, I was lying unconscious on an operating table, getting a ruptured disc cleaned out of my spine and a cadaver bone caged in its place. To that point, a year and a half of my life was lost to immense pain, all because I chose to attend a lunchtime group exercise class at the gym one fateful day. It would be another year post-surgery before the deep ache in my back would start to subside, and I’d begin to take back my life. And now, look how far I’ve come in those 10 years. My spinal injury was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. But it also brought me to yoga and rock climbing, because I was looking for enjoyable ways to strengthen my core as I recovered, important for back health. It brought me to the Appalachian Trail, because I read voraciously when I was in too much pain to do much else, and a little book called, “A Walk in the Woods,” by Bill Bryson found its way to my bookshelf during that time.
