When Douglas Wells built the U.S. Courthouse Annex in the 1994, he knew someday he'd have to gut it.
His initial lease with the federal government was only for 20 years. The offices, including that of the U.S. attorney and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Iowa, extended their stay at 210 E. Court Ave. another 10 years in 2014. But with a new courthouse ready on the opposite bank of the Des Moines River, they vacated in April.
Now, the old court annex — renamed the Riverview — is cleared and ready for renovations. Work could start in just two weeks to prepare the building for a pair of office users on the upper levels and a coffee shop, upscale restaurant, smaller eatery and private gym on the first floor.
"The potential is very exciting. We're ready to get up moving," Wells said.
