A new, unique program in the Johnston Community School District aims to help younger students who need some extra support.
johnstoncsd opened new therapeutic classrooms this school year that are designed to support students with social, emotional, behavioral and mental health needs, in addition to their academic learning. Students work with a teacher, an associate, a mental health specialist and a behavior interventionist in the therapeutic program.
The therapeutic classrooms, which are housed in remodeled district office space, now offer services in-house for students who might otherwise have to leave the district for a different program. Educators use a trauma-informed lens, which focuses on understanding how past traumatic experiences can impact students' learning and helping students feel safe and supported at school.
