40 years ago today, Prince and the Revolution released the third single and title track from ‘Purple Rain.’ The song was initially intended to be a country collaboration alongside Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks but she admitted to feeling to overwhelmed by the 10 minute instrumental to write to it. Released three months after the film soundtrack, the single quickly climbed the charts to peak at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
