Besides the beautiful plants and jaw dropping geography, Socotra has a very interesting history. Currently part of Yemen, this island has changed hands and ruling countries so many times. Even now you can see the influence and military presence of the UAE and Saudi militaries as they slowly build more infrastructure trying to gain the support of local Socotries. You see all three flags while driving around the island, but unless you ask you don’t notice any tension. The people seem happy with the new infrastructure as tourism continues to grow on the island. The nature makes this island feel like another planet since so many species are endemic. 37% of plants, 90% of reptiles, and 95% of land snails are endemic to the island.
