#Champagne Pool is one of several hot springs in Waiotapu, New Zealand. Visible in this picture as a cream-colored, raised surface is a rim of sinter, an incrustation deposited by
#geothermal activity. Orange sinter lies just below the water’s surface and is rich in arsenic, antimony, thallium,
#mercury,
#gold, and
#silver. The sinters in Champagne Pool are full of microbes, likely
#bacteria or archaea that do not use
#oxygen.
